What does a refurbished laptop warranty actually cover?
Read four clauses before the headline duration: whether the battery is covered, whether labour and return shipping are included, what evidence is required for a performance complaint, and whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund.
A twelve-month warranty that excludes the battery, charges for labour and requires you to ship the machine at your own cost is a weaker product than a six-month one that covers everything, and duration is the only one of those figures most listings advertise.
First, notice when it happens
The causes, ranked
1. Battery exclusions
most commonHow to confirm it
Many refurbished warranties treat the battery as a consumable and exclude it, or cover it for a shorter period than the rest of the machine.
The fix
Ask before buying, and prefer sellers who quote battery health and cover it. On machines with soldered batteries this clause matters more than any other.
2. Parts covered, labour not
most commonHow to confirm it
The warranty pays for the component and you pay for the work, which on a laptop can exceed the part's cost.
The fix
Confirm that labour is included. This is the most common way a warranty turns out to be worth less than it sounded.
3. Return shipping at your expense
commonHow to confirm it
You pay to send the machine and wait, sometimes for weeks, with no replacement in the meantime.
The fix
Factor it in, particularly for a cheaper machine where two shipping charges approach the value of the repair.
4. Performance claims needing evidence
commonHow to confirm it
A machine that throttles badly is a legitimate complaint and a hard one to make without measurements, which is why these disputes so often fail.
The fix
Test on arrival and keep the result. Repeatable measurements under stated conditions are what turn a subjective complaint into a claim a seller has to answer.
5. The return window doing the real work
commonHow to confirm it
For the first fourteen or thirty days you can usually return for a refund with no argument about cause, which is a far stronger position than any warranty claim.
The fix
Do all your testing inside that window. This is the single most valuable piece of advice on this page.
6. Consumer rights that exist regardless
occasionalHow to confirm it
In many countries statutory rights cover goods that are not as described or not of satisfactory quality, independently of the seller's own warranty.
The fix
Know that a seller's terms are a floor rather than a ceiling. Where a machine was misdescribed, that is a different and often stronger argument.
Measure it instead of guessing
Run the deep test on the day it arrives and save the result. It costs a few minutes, it establishes the machine's condition while every remedy is still available, and if a dispute follows it is the evidence the seller cannot answer with a suggestion to reinstall Windows.
What software cannot tell you here
- We cannot read your seller's terms, which vary enormously and are the actual subject here.
- We cannot advise on the consumer law of your country, which is worth a moment's reading and often more generous than people expect.
Asked, in people’s own words
- Do refurbished laptops come with a warranty?
- Almost always from manufacturers and specialist refurbishers, and often not in any meaningful sense from marketplace sellers who simply describe a used machine as refurbished. The presence of a warranty is a large part of what separates the two categories.
- Is the battery covered on a refurbished laptop?
- Frequently not, or only for a shorter period, because batteries are treated as consumables. Ask explicitly before buying and prefer a seller who quotes battery health as a percentage, since that number tells you how much of the battery's life you are actually purchasing.
- What if a refurbished laptop is slower than advertised?
- Return it inside the window rather than making a warranty claim, since a return needs no proof of cause. If the window has closed, a sustained test result compared against what the model normally achieves is the evidence that makes the case, and a misdescription argument is often stronger than a fault one.
