Mouse double-click test. Slow clicks, counted.
A mouse switch wears and starts to bounce, so one click arrives as two: files open when you meant to select them, drags drop halfway. Open the double-click step inside the mouse test, click slowly, about once a second, twenty times with each button, and every press that lands within 80 ms of the one before is counted as one you did not make.
One check
- Mouse
One check after another, with your progress along the top and a plain verdict on each. Nothing you show the camera or say into the microphone leaves this page.
What it measures
Measured here, not assumed.
- Spurious presses per button
- Two presses of the same button within 80 ms, press to press. That is our line: you were asked to click once a second, so a second press that soon is the switch.
- The closest gap
- The shortest gap counted for each button. A bounce is usually a few to a few tens of milliseconds.
- Clicks made
- Your slow clicks per button, out of twenty, so the count is read against a known number of presses.
If it fails
The usual failures, and what fixes each.
- The left button bounces
- The switch is worn. Replace the mouse, or the switch on a mouse worth keeping; some makers replace it under warranty. Some gaming mice have a debounce setting in their app; raise it a step.
- It doubles only in some apps
- Check the system's double-click speed. If the test counts no bounce, the mouse is fine and the setting is the cause.
- A wireless mouse doubles
- Replace the battery and move the receiver nearer first; a weak link drops releases, which can look like a double.
Where a browser stops
What it cannot tell you.
- A bounce the mouse's firmware filters never reaches the browser.
- Intermittent faults: twenty clicks catch a switch that bounces often, not one that bounces once a day.
- The double-click speed setting in the system is not read; a very slow setting makes two deliberate clicks read as a double in other apps.
Privacy
Nothing leaves this page.
The camera and microphone are read on this page and stopped as soon as they have been measured. The clip you can play back lives in the browser's memory and is discarded when you leave. The location check discards the position. The internet test sends random bytes to this site and nothing else. The result is stored nowhere unless you ask for it by email, and then only the fact that an email was sent is kept.
Questions
Mouse double-click test, answered
- How do I know if my mouse is double clicking?
- Run this test and click slowly. Any spurious press at all means the switch is bouncing. Normal use will not show it every time, so twenty slow clicks per button give it the chance.
- Why 80 ms?
- It is our line. A deliberate double click takes longer than that, and you were asked for single clicks a second apart, so a second press inside 80 ms is not you.
- Can a double-clicking mouse be fixed?
- Often, by replacing the switch, which is a small soldering job. Cleaning helps for a while. Many people replace the mouse.
